At the start of the year we launched our brand new website! This has been a real labour of love for the team and we are so proud of it. We passionately believe in moving WITH the times and a smart, strong website is essential in today’s digital world. You can read about our ethos, services and even use the live chat feature to connect directly with staff from your phone. As well as all that, the website also previewed another exciting new project…
Our video! If you’ve yet to see our video you can watch it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tblgFMNhYhI&t=82s
This was the most fun ever! We really wanted customers visiting our website to get a real feel for what it’s like to visit the practice and get the Bowen Opticians experience. Enormous thanks once again to our director and videographer Dan, and our clients Alan, Trish and Jemima for taking part so enthusiastically!
The start of 2019 also saw the launch of our eyecare scheme. This is a payment plan for clients that entitles members to the following services and privileges;
25% discount off all prescription eyewear
All routine appointments including the 4D eye health check
Priority booking and reminders
Exclusive discount on contact lenses
All this for £10 a month! We also offer a scheme for children that has proved popular. For full details including T&Cs ask a member of staff or pick up our handy leaflet.
In March we attended the Optician Awards in Birmingham as finalists of the Optical Assistant Team of the Year award. These awards are recognised as the biggest and most prestigious in the industry so to reach the finals was a huge achievement that we are very proud of.
Dr Julie Savage
Among our biggest acts of progression to date, in July we welcomed a new optometrist, Dr Julie Savage. As long-term clients will know, our director Fiona has been our only optometrist since we opened in 1994. Beloved by patients as she is, unfortunately there is only one of her! As word of mouth spread and we gained national recognition of our award-winning service, Fiona became increasingly booked up until there was no other option but to start the hunt for an additional optometrist! Using locums or temporary staff has never been the right fit for us so we were thrilled when Julie, a well-respected and loved local optometrist became available. Julie tests 3 days a week and has already proved hugely popular among both new and existing clients.
Josephine joined the team
With Julie on board we were now able to offer tests 6 days a week, with all those extra tests and clients we started looking for a new optical advisor to join the team. Jo began her optics career in a well know chain. Compassionate, conscientious and customer driven, she found the industry a perfect fit but felt restricted by the limitations and confines of a large company. Josephine is a fantastic optical advisor and far better suited to an independent practice where she can build strong and lasting relationships with clients. We are thrilled to have her!
Steph moved to Bradford
Another HUGE development of 2019 (we don’t like to rest on our laurels!) in September our manager and dispensing optician Steph took the next step in her career and began studying optometry at Bradford university. For those of you who are familiar with the family at the heart of our business, this is where Fiona (her mum) also studied. Since completing her dispensing degree, Steph’s depth of knowledge and experience has deepened greatly and we know she will make a fantastic optometrist. Waving goodbye to her for a year as been difficult but when she returns in 2020 to begin her pre-registration year it will all be worth it!
10 years of service, a promotion, and another year of study
Elsewhere in the team, 2019 saw Kate, a familiar face to many, celebrate a decade with the company, congratulations Kate! Maisie, our optical advisor and lab technician was promoted to supervisor, a well-earned position, and Alex, our student dispensing optician, passed another year of study with flying colours. Go team!
What a year it’s been! We’ve certainly packed a lot in and 2020 looks to be just as big. With Alex set to graduate and Steph returning to the practice as an optometrist it’s going to be another year of exciting progression. With a refit on the cards too…watch this space!
