Visual Stress Assessments

Find out more about visual stress and how we can help

It may surprise you to learn that it is quite common to experience discomfort when looking at a page of print.

Symptoms can present in a number of different ways including:

  • Words or letters that appear to move and ‘dance’ about the page
  • Distracting patterns forming between lines or words
  • Glare from the white page
  • Excessive fatigue when reading or writing

If you have any of these symptoms and would like to give coloured tints a try, at Bowen Opticians we offer a test that will help identify the optimum colour and shade.

This condition is known as Meares-Irlen Syndrome or ‘visual stress’ and it can affect people of all ages. Many of those with the condition report that the introduction of a specific colour can ease visual discomfort and dramatically improve their experience when reading.

The most helpful colour varies from person to person and many report that getting the exact shade and tone right makes a huge difference. Some say that even a small change away from their preferred colour can substantially increase their symptoms again, and this is why our Visual Stress Assessment can be so helpful!

The specialist software calculates the specific mix of colours that alleviate visual stress the most. During the assessment we measure the level of your symptoms when reading against a white background. We then take you through a series of colours to find which shades promote a comfortable reading experience. The intelligent system refines the options, mixing different colours together, until one final tone is recommended. We then measure the level of symptoms again – this time with the preferred colour as the background. We’ll talk you through the results and discuss any measurable improvements.

If the chosen colour makes a difference and you’d like to give it a try, we can supply this precise colour in the form of tinted lenses for your glasses (with or without prescription), or you may prefer a coloured overlay and co-ordinating reading rule.
